Problem gamblers are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, and engage in other behaviors that are considered disordered. Gambling has been associated with high rates of self-harm and addiction. There is little evidence to indicate that Internet gambling is the cause of problem gambling.
Most studies of problem gamblers have been cross-sectional, and many of the findings are based on self-report. Researchers are still looking for ways to incorporate Internet gambling behaviour with the offline gambling behaviors that may be involved. Although some studies show a correlation between problem gambling and involvement in internet gambling, other researchers argue that there is no solid causal link.

Nevertheless, there is no proof to suggest that the rate of problem gambling has increased in response to internet gambling.

One of the main challenges to enforcement of the laws against illegal Internet gambling has been constitutional. Some of the arguments for prosecuting the activity are based on the Commerce Clause, the First Amendment, and the Due Process Clause. These attacks have had little success.
In 2007, 6 percent of the British population used the Internet to gamble. However, that number does not include the purchase of lottery tickets on the Internet. Because of this, the rate of gambling on the Internet is much higher in the UK than in other countries.
